Pool Safety Tips for Dogs

June 5, 2018No CommentsBlue Chip

Most dogs love to jump into the swimming pool and take a dip on a hot day. After all, where do you think the term “doggie paddle” originated? Even if your dog is a natural in the water, it’s important to keep these six safety tips in mind when you head to the pool together.

Evaluate Swimming Ability

Test your dog in shallow water before hitting the deep end. Some dogs may flounder rather than keeping themselves afloat. This applies even if you have a breed well-known for its swimming abilities since every individual dog is different.

Use Safety Equipment

If your dog is not an expert swimmer or you plan to be at the water all day, consider a doggie life vest. Make sure this flotation device fits appropriately and is comfortable for your dog to wear.

Reward Obedience

If you’re taking your dog in the water, it’s essential that he or she is willing and able to obey commands. Never take a dog swimming that can’t respond to simple commands like sit and stay. Reward your dog for following your commands, especially when near the water, to encourage this behavior.

Supervise At All Times

Even if your pet is an avid swimmer, anything can happen in the water. Never leave your dog unattended in the swimming pool. If he or she gets tired or swallows water, drowning can happen quickly. You may even want to learn the CPR procedures that apply to your pet.

Provide an Easy Exit

Your dog can probably jump into the pool, but can he or she get out quickly? Dogs can’t climb ladders, so make sure you provide a ramp or other exit that your dog can access. Otherwise, dogs tend to swim until they are dangerously exhausted.

Don’t Forget Sun Protection

If you’re in the pool, chances are the weather is hot and sunny. Make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water to drink and a shady area to rest. Like any living creature, dogs can get overheated and dehydrated, resulting in a trip to the vet. They can even get sunburnt (if your pet isn’t particularly furry), so make sure to keep an eye on their well-being in the sunshine.

Of course, it’s also important to keep your pool clean and clear to maximize safety. The specialists at Blue Chip Pool Service can help keep your pool in peak condition and educate you on pool safety and maintenance.
