If cleaning the pool manually is a summer task you dread, you’ve probably considered investing in an automatic pool cleaner. These devices can limit the amount of time you spend on this tedious chore and maximize the time you can spend enjoying your pool. Here’s what you need to know about the three main types of automatic pool cleaners.
Pressure Pool Cleaner
This device cleans your pool using water pressure from either your pool’s primary circulation pump or a portable booster pump. This pressure removes debris from the pool and moves it into an attached bag.
Pressure pool cleaners work best if your pool is beset with leaves and other large debris, common if trees surround it. Pool owners like this device because it’s durable and requires minimal maintenance to work well. However, it’s not the best choice if you’re looking for an automatic pool cleaner that can remove fine particles of debris, or scrub the walls of the pool.
Suction Pool Cleaner
This device uses vacuum suction to clean the waters, floor, and sometimes walls of a swimming pool. The debris goes directly into the pool filter. The suction pool cleaner is adept at catching fine particles of dirt and sand. A suction cleaner is also the most affordable type of pool cleaner. However, the direct attachment to the filter means more cleaning and maintenance in that area. This device is probably not the best choice if your pool tends to fill with grass and leaves.
Robotic Pool Cleaner
A robotic cleaner uses an electric motor attached to a low-voltage transformer and gathers debris using an integrated pump and filters. Some models even have smart technology that can teach the robot to clean the pool more effectively and allow you to control the robot remotely from your smartphone or device.
The robotic pool cleaner is the most versatile of the three types, suitable for cleaning debris of all sizes and scrubbing the pool’s surface. It also circulates the pool water. However, the electrical cord limits this device’s range of motion, and this is a more expensive option that requires regular maintenance to keep the internal components working correctly. Proper pool maintenance can be a challenging task.
